Your plan doesn't sound too bad, but governmet oversights such as these are somewhate arbitrary. We don't know if the power companies will be able to afford that or if it will be possible at all.
I sort of have a problem with the government telling companies to have to do this. 1. I'm not totally convinced the Government has the constitutional right to do that (at the Federal level). 2. I'm disappointed that the companies aren't better at doing this themselves. 3. There has to be a better way than having the government fix this.
I think there are two ways as consumers we can affect this situation.
1. Competition. I don't think there are many places where you can choose which power company you buy from. However, if you can do business with one company over another for cleaner energy than do it. You can also get a solar panel for your house. It's expensive. However, perhaps if you get your neighborhood to pitch in, your community can become energy independant overtime.
2. Communication. I think that if the Energy companies realized how badly they are hurting the environment (if and who they are) then they would do a better job. There probably are groups already. Send a petition to the company signed by your community or city, etc.
3. Lawsuits. If there is direct evidence that their pollution is hurting the environment, particularly affecting human lives (cancer, asthma, etc), SUE THEIR PANTS OFF.
And as far as a discussion rule, I don't care about winning arguments here. I'd rather we stop Al Qaeda from killing more people. |
