...they tell you not to be surprised by the cracking noise that comes when you do your chest compressions...that it's just bones popping in the ligaments that hold the ribs in place. They warn you so you're not surprised when it happens and so you don't automatically think you've started breaking bones and push lighter (or stop altogether). As I understand it, your chest gets pretty beat up in CPR (aside from the stopped heart thing) and you're lucky if you don't end up with broken ribs as a tradeoff of being alive.
