I read 2 memorable tales of people using the oven as a storage place. One tale was of a mom who routinely used her oven to store her Tupperware (why I can't imagine). While she was out one evening, her son invited his girlfriend over. Anxious to impress, the girlfriend preheated the oven and began whipping up a splendid dinner. You can guess the rest.
The other tale is of a young couple who invited some friends over for the evening. The kitchen was a disaster, so they stuffed the oven full of all the dirty dishes, wiped down the counters, and welcomed their guests into a tidy home. And the guests had brought a fresh homemade pie that just needed to be popped into the oven.
My parents were ultra-paranoid about kitchen safety, so I've just learned to use the oven only for baking. Plus I don't trust myself to remember if I hide things in it that don't belong there. :)
