other than by ceremony. What usually happens is the minister/priest/etc.. get certified to become a "Justice of the Peace", who have the authority to sign the marriage license ceremony or no. Churches simply don't recognize the marriage unless the appropriate ceremony is performed and the marriage license is signed by the head of the church. The reverse is not true for the state. My wife and I just found the local judge, went to his house, and had him sign the paper and he offered to cook us a burger as it was about dinner time anyway LOL.. that's small town Tennessee for ya.
