Actually, I am pretty well-educated, and I still love to read - a lot. (My wife keeps complaining that we are going to have to buy a bigger house just to make room for my personal library...).
Polygamy doesn't detract from my argument, because it is still the union of a man and a woman. As for the Amerindian example: for all intents and purposes, they transformed one of the men into a woman so that a traditional marriage could take place.
And even if there are a handful of cultures that practice same-sex marriage, so what? They are, to coin a phrase, merely the exceptions that prove the rule.
Try and remember that, from their point of view, it is you who are trying to burden them with the yoke of your ideology!
One more thing; you and Illiad seem to have a problem understanding the meaning of the word society, since you continue to talk and think in terms of two separate societies here, as if you can hold "their" religious society at arm's length, and that is simply not the case. You all are living together as Canadians, in a Canadian society, just as we here in the States all have to live as Americans, in American society; the fact that both are more secular than they were 100, or even 50 years ago, is irrelevent, because there are large groups within them that remain religious, and their views count just as much as yours or mine.
Or are you proposing that the opinions and views of individuals who belong to religious groups no longer count outside the confines of their particular religion? |
