The only reason I even diagnosed the cause is because I managed to replicate the error on TWO machines... one's Slack 9 and the other Red Hat 8.0. So that ruled out distro-based problems. Then it clicked -- "Ah ha! I've had this problem before!". I code in C more often than C++, so I'm used to automatically using gcc. :)
