ok laymans explaination by Celticess 2003-08-24 20:21:35
gentoo linux uses something called a portage tree... in windows terms think of the "add remove" pannel on control.

Things in the tree are what can be added. Instead of using a fancy clicky interface tho(and yes there are some one is called kportage) most of use use the commandline... something like a dos window.

Now you know those shortcuts in windows how clicking one launches whatever for you? Well linux calls those symlinks. And it doesn't just go to start programs it goes to link anything together. You know in windows how you've got maybe more than one browser but all are sharing say the shockwave plugin install? Well in linux that is called virtuals. It's linked inside the portage tree in a list file. So that you don't have a whole bunch of whatever there you just share the one as the one will do.

Reciently gentoo updated thease "virtuals" aka symlinks in the list. So now we don't quite fetch as many files when updating. But in fixing it/changing it you have to redo a few files or they just released the newer version of a program with the new "virtuals" set for it.

Now in linux to update... you know how you click windows update? In gentoo linux most of us open a console (think like dos window)... and type "emerge sync" which gives us the latest list of programs we can use. Then "emerge -puDv world" which says check in the list of files for updates to programs I've installed and tell me what they are and what they need to install/update. Then we do "emerge -uD world" which says ok fine go get the files and update them for me. :) And again instead of doing it on the command line we do have graphical tools just most of us still like the command line. :)
