Out of curiosity, were you pulling one of those gags, and if so which one? And would an apology be completely out of line? You don't have to apologize for saying it, or promise not to do it again, but you can apologize that the joke offended, and express a desire not to offend him in the future. The TLP of the thread you linked to is a very generalized version of a similiar gag (wich I've learned only works with the right company) where you jokingly raz someone in hopes of them jokingly razzing you back. The whole point is to humorously engage others.
