If we can't think of other societies that define marriage as anything other than between a man and a woman, it's because we're not very broadly educated and perhaps too egocentric. Islam allows for multiple wives. So did the Mormons for a time. Many African cultures also practice polygamy. In some Native American cultures, gays were allowed to be married as long as one of them played the role of woman, dressing and acting as a woman and performing all the wifely duties. We have been burdened with the yoke of religious ideology for too long. If they wish to practice exclusivity within their ranks, so be it. If they wish to impose their ideologies upon the rest of us, forget it. If their religion is so tenuous to them as to be threatened by secular society, then they need to deal with that problem of their faith on their own terms.
