  • Do all the reading and all the assignments and talk to your professors.
  • Don't skip classes--you'll miss something important!
  • Manage your sleep and nutrition to optimize your health and performance--brains really will work optimally when they get at least 8 hours of sleep every night and health meals--especially a healthy breakfast.
  • Exercise is a great stress reducer, so it is healthy to participate in activities that enable you to burn off some steam (I like ultimate frisbee and martial arts, for example).
  • Try to meet new friends and find companions, early. If homesickness is going to set in later, it's nice to have people already in the picture that you can hang out with, instead of having to scramble around to find emotional support, later.
  • Sharing a Shower? Wear shower shoes and treat foot problems quickly--before the germs get into your shoes, and they, too become a source of infection (this has never happened to me, but I've seen others have this become a big problem because they ignored the symptoms at first).
  • Avoid the credit card scammers who will flood you with spam--they're looking to collect as much interest from you as possible, and some are especially manipulative of college students (one used to send me blank checks for "free" money that only would cost me 25% interest to use!!)
  • Have fun, but be sensible about it!!!
