it happened more by accident than anything. The first week was "Frosh Week"... a bunch of activities designed to boost school spirit, let you meet new people, whatever. You had to pay to participate, and I didn't give a rat's behind about it even if it had been free, so I stayed in my room and coded the whole week. Pretty much NO ONE was left on the floor for most of the day, so I'd just leave my door open to get a nice airflow going through the room.
When people started talking to me (usually they'd knock on the door or doorframe first, they didn't just walk in), I was kinda surprised and also slightly annoyed (the personal space issue, not wanting to be hassled, etc). But within a week or so I knew everyone on the floor, I was known as the resident geek god, and I had made some friends... some of whom I'm currently sharing a house with. So in retrospect it was probably a good thing.
As far as not being bugged with I was deeply involved with something, I'd just get up and close the door. That was my signal that I didn't want to talk to anyone, be bothered, etc. Worked great all year! :) |
