This system is going to be a server, operating mostly-headless, so KDE and Gnome are both mostly pointless. Not to mention the fact that this is only a 300Mhz box, and I've heard of KDE compiles taking on the order of days with good hardware.

Now, to get all the applicable server software installed and configured...Pure FTPd, Samba, maybe Apache...
