I used the gaming sources. Now it's compiling then after that got to add hotplug and carry on through the config instructions. There is a new kernel config util but I actually opted for doing it by hand to learn and also as I used the knoppix to install things from so gentoo didn't auto detect anything afik. Btw try openbox. You can use kde and gnome stuff from it. Altering the menu is easy. It's small, fast, and looks reasonable. :) Doing kde will take you forever... doing gnome if you use "gnome-light" wont take as long.
