It should have been the 'F' key to operate the switch, if it worked for the MG nests it'll work for the switch. Walk up to it, point the crosshair at the switch to get the grey switch prompt thingy, then use the 'F' key. I don't believe you need any energy in the power bar (bottom right) to operate it. Jump in on FireballMatt's server and have a practise/explore while noone else is around.

As for gaming in Linux, you're on your own. The whole hassle of configuring my GeForce card was what turned me away from Linux as a desktop solution.
