in a transmission. bps is the number of bits transmitted per second. Minimally, there has to be two signal levels in the transmission (1 bit per baud). In this case, the baud rate is the same as the bps. However, there can be more than two signal levels, allowing for 2, 4, 8, 16, etc. bits per baud.

What is the baud rate of a 56kbps modem?
