Though I don't think that punishing him would have made him any less of a threat to society--I'm doubtful that there was anything we could have done to repair his mind. AND I agree that it is a good thing we no longer have to worry that he might be paroled or escape or somehow get out. Here's one reason I feel the way I do about this: This man murdered some of my neighbors and classmates, and he terrified our entire town for weeks. I do not understand why he has not been executed yet, but I have a choice to be at peace about it or to go to war over it. I have made my choice.
