Open Source: Where's the money? by Didactylos2003-08-23 07:33:37
The money isn't in developing OSS by SnappingTurtle2003-08-23 11:20:21
Oh, I understand the POINT of OSS by Didactylos 2003-08-23 12:03:32
I just don't see what's in it for the developers. And from the replies today, my worst fears are confirmed. There's nothing in it for the shmucks that just want to code.

I think I'm going to go away and study te Microsoft Shared Source licence. There may be hope there - although it is big companies like M$ who should be embracing OSS. It's easy to see why they don't though. Microsoft are selling software, most of it directly to personal users and business users. IBM are much more involved in the software service industry, providing custom solutions and support. Open source makes sense for them, but not for Microsoft.

I was watching something about inventors on Discovery, recently. It made the point that if you have a unique, patented idea, you can market it to a big company, and let them take on the boring part of actually selling it. But if your idea has been done before, then no matter how "original" it is in other ways, the company can just go "hmmmmmm - no thanks" then rip off the idea. Software developers have the same problem. Make a good idea open source, and it is very difficult to retain any IP rights over it. Obviously, you retain copyright, but that isn't enough. Is there any answer?
