Open Source: Where's the money? by Didactylos2003-08-23 07:33:37
The money isn't in developing OSS by SnappingTurtle 2003-08-23 11:20:21
One of the great confusions about OSS is that there needs to be a profit motive in engaging in the sole business of developing open source software. Well... there isn't.

The profit motive is that when you are engaged in whatever other profitable activities you do in life... manufacturing cars, scientific research, whatever... OSS provieds you with solid software with which to engage in that activity. If you need to modify the software, you can do so. If you need to install it in more stations you can do so. Oh, and if youc need a million other eyes to check out the software for bugs, OSS provides you with that too.

There's the basic answer. I've got a nice clean essay written up somewhere, I'll post it if I find it. :-)
