Allow me to clarify the FHM situation once and for by WebDiva 2003-07-11 19:47:04
all. It is a short-term exchange of banners. No money involved. It is meant to increase traffic to the UF site, because our demographics -- 18-34 yr old males -- are similar. To the ad agency in NY who sometime sell UF inventory, those demographics and getting our numbers up is a huge factor in making sales. They pitch inventory to potential advertisers like MS, HP, etc. Folks who have ad money. That does not mean that getting clients of this size is easy or a slam-dunk every business quarter. Our site is still considered small potatoes to large advertisers.

We have not had a large client since MS in the winter/spring, in case you're keeping track. This means no advertising revenue of note for UF. And Geekfinder numbers are also way down -- it usually makes us a small amount every month -- so that cheque is getting smaller and smaller as the search activity declines. I have also reached out to other community sites for small number banner exchanges, with the hopes of elevating our numbers. Some have been happy to do so, others have not even bothered to reply.

It is not an easy market, by any stretch of the imagination, yet somehow we have managed to stay in business for 5 1/2 years. As for UF being money-grubbing, I warn you to not even entertain that notion ever again. I mean it. We could have sold out 14 times over for the huge dollars to be had in pop-ups, pop-unders and full-page features. We never did. And believe me, the potential dollars involved are huge.

As for how the banner exchange is doing, the FHM ad has garnered the highest clickthru rate of any banner ad ever run on the UF site. Ever. UF stats are reflecting activity from countries that we have never previously seen as regular activity. So some of this effort is working, it just hasn't translated into a big sale yet.

Now then, you tell me Mr. BizWiz, how do 3 people stay employed when there is no new ad revenue coming in and any remaining cash goes to paying expenses for the site? And you wonder why Illiad got crabby....
