You can debate almost ANYTHING on UF! by adiplomat 2003-07-11 15:39:32
I take some fairly serious issue with maligning our UF staff and mods. I challenged "AntiFHM" to come back and do this debate under hir "real" username. Greyhat answered "Well see I would, but I enjoy the UF Boards...".

That appears to me to mean Greyhat believes that moderation and/or banning would follow if you debate things that the UF staff doesn't like. Correct me if I'm wrong, Greyhat, but that's how it appears to me. This isn't about just Greyhat's post, though, but more a common theme with some UFies.

Do you realize that you could debate the morality of child pornography, and take a "pro" position (stop it, you pervs!), so long as you were careful to keep it abstract? It would require such extreme tapdancing that every post might take 1/2 an hour to frame, but if you did it correctly, the mods would not touch you? NOTHING would save such an idiot from the REST of us, including mods acting as normal "citizens", but it could be done!

Take the "AntiFHM" post (Please! **drum riff**). That could have been EASILY argued without links at all. If the link just HAD to be there, there's proper protocol to be gone thru (use the UF referrers), but the link can be there. I myself can see the position "AntiFHM" took as a valid argument. I don't agree with it, but it's valid.

I am tired of people saying "censorship" this and that, when this board is about as free as you can get with any regulation at all, and also keep ad money coming in.

Do you think Slashdot is free, for example? How about trying to express an opinion when a couple hundred ID10ts immediately mob the post, and distort what you said, and make it impossible to follow anything? The mods here prevent such foolishness. That's why I post here so much, and have posted on Slashdot an average of once a year, for my 7 (I think) years of having an account there.

Please don't believe that you can't debate things here. That you can't have topics because "the mods don't like it.". Read the FAQ, ask a mod about any gray areas, and go for it! The rules here allow most anything, if you just read and follow them!
