the rights of people. The proliferation of crime is showing that people accept the loss of those rights more and more. The cause of this acceptance could be many things - lack of effective law enforcement, and lack of protection agains misuse of laws would certainly have an effect. The lack of outrage against the Patriot act and the lies told to push Congress into enacting it is one more symptom. However, it doesn't change the fact that without the rights of individuals being enforced by the government we are taking a huge step backwards in social development. For Bush to say give away your rights to allow me to protect you from those who wish to violate those rights is the equivalent of a feudal lord saying accept me as your liege and I will protect you against other lords. He is little better than those criminals you lament going unpunished - he is simply in power for now. And he is trying to change the system so that when someone you DON'T agree with comes into power you will be much more helpless.
