...which party is in power.

The Patriot Act would have been just as viable under a Clinton administration with gung-ho Janet Reno as attorney general as it is now. The only reason it was made into a law was because it gave unprecedented power to the gov't. Neither party will willingly revoke that power from themselves.

IMHO, we won't be free from such intrusions on personal liberty until we have protection (as a law or court edict) for all facets of our own personal information. In the "information age", personal information should be the sole property of the average citizen, not a revolving door of data to be stolen by the gov't (or any other entity, for that matter). There should be the same search-and-seizure legal barriers for the gov't mining info about its citizens as there are supposed to be for any other aspect of personal property.

And those protections should be extended to a business community that's been profiting for years from the self-serving unwillingness of the government to protect our rights of privacy. I find it most odd that groups like the RIAA/MPAA would push laws that support the use of spyware/hacking/virus-style tactics to find and punish out who's misusing their own intellectual property, ignoring the damage they do to the information property of those who may or may not be even breaking the law.

But that's just me, indulging in a birthday rant.

Any other thoughts?
