Yes, the govt CAN abuse it. Yes, it probably will. Hell, I may even be one of the victims that gets screwed over.
However, you have to trust the Govt (and NOT just Bush/your fave politician) at some point to do what is good for the country as a whole *even* if it's bad for some individuals.
Going through Nation State has and corresponding with the writer has made me realise that at least in very rough terms, what's good for the people is NOT always what's good for the person, and there are compromises that have to be made on both sides.
Sometimes it's necessary to limit the rights of the individual to protect the nation has a whole (be it the current wave of terrorism, or slapping wire taps on drug runners), and other times, the nation has to suck it up and take a hit to protect the rights of the individual.
Supporting the rights of the individual at *all* costs will only lead the degredation of the nation as a whole, and will speed up the fall of said nation to various internal pressures, like politicians ending up fighting between themselves so much that the people are forgotten, except as weapons for the next political battle.
