I seem to remember being told that I was baptised when I was born. As for birth religion, I didn't really have one. It wasn't until grade 5/6 when my family moved from Edmonton (Alberta) to Port Moody (BC) that my parents decided that our family could use some churchin' up.
So, we went to the local Alliance church until we moved back to Edmonton (gr12).
My family is still VERY much involved in the church. Teaching Sunday School, misc volunteering, working the vacation bible school, etc.
I stopped believing/caring about such things in grade 11 or so. There were a few reasons. However, the main two were:
1) I found that as I thought about my own personal beliefs, and those of the church, that they started agreeing less and less.
2) I got sick and tired of hearing that I was going to hell, that I was corrupting society, and the cause of all the problems with divorce and such simply because of the fact that I was born gay. Hell, my parent's church (like many others) had a petition for people to sign saying that they don't want gay marriage. I found a lot of what they were saying to be the exact opposite of this 'Christian love' that they were saying they were so full of.
At this point, I would say that I was athiest.
Now, I've changed yet again. I would classify myself as a spiritual individual, with no ties to any one belief or religion. I have basically taken the lessons that I've learned through life, and formed my own belief style. The simplest way to describe it is that I try to do what I think is right, I try not to harm others, and I in general try to not to make things worse through my actions.
Some might say that I'm a Humanist, or Agnostic, or a cross between Christian/Agnostic/Buddhist/etc. Call it what you will. I just use the term 'spiritual person'. |
