Any material technologists out there? by Sleepy_Head2003-07-11 02:00:13

    I going to attempt a ....... (drum roll) ...... by Sleepy_Head 2003-07-11 10:01:33
A near 0°K processor.

It's a bit complex, but the processor will not be silicon based, and the component material for the chip internals are a bit of a pain to work out. It's all basically theoretical at the moment, but I plan to do some initial testing on older P1 chips, to see what the effect of near 0° tempratures are on standard chips. Things like the effect on the electrical path ways, will it actually function at very low tempratures etc. I plan to start off dropping the temprature down to the same as used in the modern super computers and then go down from there. I'm not sure it will even work, but if you don't try you'll never know.

It's something I've been toying with for years, but have never had the money, time or knowledge to attempt before. And I have loads of time on my hands and fancy the challenge.

Any component material suggestions would be handy, and anyone who knows any limitations of dropping a chip to near 0° would be nice.
