At a company where I used to work, one supervisor was notorious for her "hatchet attacks." She'd invent a bogus rumor about someone, share it with one of "her favorites," and wait. Withing a week, she'd hear that rumor come back to her from a totally different source. And since this constituted "confirmation" of her initial "suspicions," she was off and running with "THE TRUTH!"
