My brother-in-law was bitten on the foot several years ago by a brown recluse that had crawled into his shoe. Although the fact he is diabetic increased the dangers and effects of the venom, he spent a period of time with an incised opening in his foot packed with gauze to draw out venom and absorb seepage from the wound. He also spent a number of weeks doing hyperbaric-chamber therapy three days a week to keep his foot and prevent aputation. Not everyone has such complications, but how can you not get bitten when the damn things crawl into shoes?
