| What birth religion? |

Although I don't really remember, I'm fairly sure I didn't believe in anything the moment I was born. I did get registered as a member of the Church of Sweden, because my father was a member, because his parents were members, and so on. Does that qualify as a birth religion?
As far back as I do remember, I have never believed in gods, spirits or magic crystals, just like I have never believed in ghosts, werewolves, trolls, elves, hobbits or flying saucers. My parents never taught me to believe in these things. I'm not sure whether I ever believed in Santa Claus. I'd have to ask my mother. No one really tried to make me believe in Santa Claus either, but unlike Jesus and the flying saucers he actually showed up every christmas.
As I have grown older I have found that the only way we can understand our universe is by scientific studies, and science in its current state doesn't provide any reasons to think that gods, spirits or magic crystals would exist. I'll readily admit that we don't know everything, but just because we don't yet know exactly how gravity works that doesn't mean there has to be a god who constantly pulls things in various directions to make gravity work.
So I can't say I have seriously considered joining a religion, but I have given some thought to my beliefs and found that no change was necessary – or rather that my world picture will change naturally as I learn new things and as science progresses. Should it be discovered that crystals of silicon dioxide really do have magic powers I'll be skeptical at first, but if the proofs hold I will believe it.
I'm still a member of the Church of Sweden by the way. The tax to the church is really neglectible compared to all the other taxes, but some day it will probably annoy me enough to make me find out how to leave. |
