and once it has snapped/stretched/torn itself asunder in the middle
the two remaining pieces hurl away in oposite directions
spinning at slower rates than the original object, around
their respective centers of mass.

Eventually, they approach some other object, of significant mass
where they either enter an orbital state, or more likely collide
with the object.

If the object was a star, then your 'long rigid rod' became a hot
melted puddle, or 'rod rain' while still a million miles away,
and evaporated into 'Llyr's rod gas' (the basis of your original thought)
by the time it aproached the star's corona, where solar wind kindly
dispersed it over trillions of cubic kilometers above the star
so that it can no longer harm the brains of unsuspecting UFies.
