So I've heard... I'm just using the static off an old monitor. lol

(tape a layer of aluminum foil on the screen, leaving a 1" gap between it and the frame)

Van De Graaf generators look easy. It's just a thin belt of some nonconductor, stretched between two nonconductive rollers, a metal globe to store the static, and some method of 'catching' it, be it a wire mesh connected to the globe, or just a metal arm over the top roller...
