Alpha males, that is the ones who show their teeth, are the ones who get to breed. Therefore, natural selection favors chimps who 1) show their teeth, and 2) learn when not to do so.

Sex for pleasure is irrelevant when only alphas can get away with it.

Instinct pushes to Be the alpha, thus pushes for the "boastful" yawns. NOT showing teeth is the learned behavior to keep from getting clobbered.
