The quotation explicitly states that self-recognition was empirically proven, and that self-awareness was demonstrated.

While self-respect was not stated in the part quoted, Doormat has read the book, and he states that self-respect is shown.

Also, if self-respect was not present, why do they demonstrate the same forms of self-awareness that humans do when they are showing they're ashamed of something (the quotes reference to baboons acting the same as humans covering up a "defect")?
