Hmm, new one on me.
Your reasoning, by the way, stinks. Here's a breakdown of it:
1) They are meek in front of alphas and other members
2) They yawn "boastfully" (boast is a charged word that probably doesn't apply) only in private
3) Thus they MUST be doing it for personal reasons
It was suggested that the tooth display is done to show strength, which is attractive to females but will be challenging to alpha-males. It was implied but not picked up on that this is instinctive behavior. The implications of this are that all males will do it when they can. The "weak" males won't do it in front of others because they will get in trouble. Doing it in front of other species is immaterial to them - there's no competition for females from a bird, for example.
Ignoring all that and concentrating on your reasoning: how in the heck do you make such a huge leap from step 2 to step 3? There's no connection there, just you wanting it to be the case and presenting it as the only possibility.
BTW, "humans getting all brave AFTER the fight" is a very primitive behavior. Not one that requires complex abstract thought. This is something you will likely see in other primates in similar situation. Humans striving to prevent a fight, on the other hand, is not something other primates are likely to do. That takes quite a bit of reasoning ability. |
