Humans have sex for pleasure as do dolphins. Monkeys masturbate.
Granted, that could be a habit. I know it is in some humans :)
I can understand an animal (humans included) showing off to attract a female. No question there. But why do it when you're on your own?
Practice? Possibly. But that assumes that the animal in question may be alpha-male some day. In non-Darwin environments, I can see that happening (like zoos, bars, etc), but showing off your weaknesses in the wild will get you whipped (if it's your own species) or killed (if prey is watching).
Either way, if you're NOT the alpha male, it is safer to limit yawning to non-boasts, which is what instinct would push for.
So if they are doing boastful yawnings, only in private, it must be for some personal reason, like humans getting all brave AFTER the fight (Yeah! Come back here and say that!)
