Granted, you never said that it referenced other animals.

So, if it only references same species, why do it in private? It's not just a yawn, but a boast. If they don't have self-respect, why would it matter to them to act like the alpha-male seeing as they know they're inferior (even if it's a learnt behaviour vs a cognitive one)?

If it does reference other species, showing a potential predator that you're not up to par makes you a target for them. It shows your not the strongest, or fittest and a good candidate for lunch. Even more reason to NOT want to show off your teeth. It's the bush. You don't know WHO is watching. Animals who forget that don't live long.
