Survival of the Fittest - showing "unhealthy" teeth could have a negative impact on your survival ability. For that matter, I believe humans developed our current complex and stupid insecurities from similar origins. It made sense "in nature", but we should be above such things "in civilization". Instead, we've made them much worse.
