Broken/yellowed teeth are a sign of failing health. Displaying signs of weakness where preditors or compititors could see them is contrary to the instinct for self preservation.
Cleanliness is important to health in an environment (like the natural environment of chimps) containing parasites and vermin. Naturally the chimp would try to clean off the paint marks.
No self-respect required, just self awareness and survival instincts. I could be wrong, but this fits the facts as well or better then your "self-respect" claim. |
