In verbal conversations, most people are doing all they can to maintain one thread. In chat rooms, not only do people maintain multiple conversational threads with multiple participants, but sometimes maintain multiple threads with only one other participant. Perhaps AJ's inability to tell Miranda how he feels (outside of chat) merely springs from a lack of "downward compatibility" with the inherently inferior vocal communications protocol.
