At least, they can be made to do so.

The local news media went wild when a gun store reasonably near me was revealed to have sold more "crime guns" than any other store in the state of Wisconsin.

Sounds bad, doesn't it?

How about if you find out that the store is quite a large business AND is located just outside a city that has NO gun stores. Looks a little different, doesn't it?

It also came out that the "crime guns" phrasing was a little loose -- it include guns that were stolen and then recovered by the police. (I don't know how the ATF categorized things when developing their statistics.)

As for the "1.2%" selling "57%" -- consider this: What if that same "1.2% of the nations gun dealers" also sold 57% of all firearms NOT used in crimes? (I'm not saying that's the case, just that without context, the statistic cited doesn't tell us much.)
