Can anybody explain a comic to me? by Naruki2006-11-19 12:55:59
  Nick Names by ChuckAB2003-06-06 05:02:44

Given names with a myriad of "nick names" associated with them usually were the names of English Kings (Richard, John, Elizabeth), and were given to male children born during the reign. So, there would be scores of children in a community with the name "Richard" for example, and the nick names would pop up to tell one person from another. At least that's how it was explained to me (mostly for the variations on Elizabeth: Liz, Lizzy, Beth, Bet, Betty, Betsy, Eliza).
