C would be a good starting point. Set yourself a small task and write the C to accomplish it.
Hello World is all very well, but it teaches you nowt!

I first learnt to program in BBC BASIC, and got in VERY deep (such that I was including assembly functions and using foibles of the interpreter and processor), which unfortunately made it very difficult for me to switch to C.

I still forget the semicolon a lot, and tend to look up syntax pretty often.

However, the basic precepts are the same in most languages!
