I think for a beginer programer though, a best option would be traditional C. I know there are lots of disagreement on this, but it will offer a lot of learning potential and if learnt properly gives a good base to move into OO (especially if you can get a firm grasp on pointers) and should make learning an interpriter language like pearl a peace of [select * from cake/pie/piss] :-)
