Ethics are rules of conduct. Lying is breaking one of those rules. Therefore, lying is unethical.
However, sometimes rules _have_ to be broken, because the alternatives are much worse. The whole concept of degree again.
Here's an example that might make sense. Laws are rules. Theft is breaking one of those rules, thus it is unlawful. If your baby is drowning and you "steal" someone's boat to go rescue it, the law will understand. Though you have technically committed a crime, you are exonerated because the alternative is much worse. |
