I still don't know whether I believe shyness is learned, but even if it is, I wouldn't say that's not a "natural state", as LurkerMo was stating. Or perhaps I should rephrase that to there are a lot of learned behaviors that are so inherent they are for all practical purposes the "natural state", and I don't think that's a bad thing.

There are many things I do which may not be the original "natural state" that I wouldn't want to change. For example, I'm glad that I was potty trained and don't wander around defecating on myself and my immediate surroundings. I'm glad that I learned to walk on two legs. Both of those are certainly learned behavior, but are now so ingrained as to be "natural". In fact, society would consider me unnatural if I didn't learn them.
