Excellent quote by bitflipper 2003-06-02 13:30:31
"The only way to be above reproach is to conduct yourself so that there is no need of reproach."

Succinct and memorable -- I like that. And it holds up well under examination, too.

I one time tried to derive a system of ethics from first principles -- it's not that easy an exercise. Especially when the only first principle you'll allow yourself is "cogito ergo sum". But what I came up with had the Golden Rule embedded deeply within itself. It seemed to me that any being capable of acknowledging its own existence would also be able to acknowledge the existence of others, and would be able to posit motivations for those others similar to its own. Therefore, it would behoove any such being to treat other apparently self-aware and intelligent entities with the same respect it accords itself, out of the belief that those other entities would follow a similar line of thought and treat it with respect in return. In short, it would follow the Golden Rule. And why would it do so? Because "the only way to be above reproach is to conduct yourself so that there is no need of reproach."
