And since it is a theoretical discussion, extremes come into play. The theory says that given perfect understanding and comprehension there would not be any need to indulge in mind altering drugs. Not even a beer! Of course, any indulgence small enough not to have any effect can be considered to be just enjoying the flavor:-) Our lack of perfection in this as well as other things mean that we enjoy these mind altering experiences, for whatever reasons. Whether those experiences are harmful to ourselves or others is again not possible to determine due to our imperfections. As far as unethicality goes, however, a few drinks among friends is low enough on the scale not to register. It may even be on the positive side, everything considered.
