whose grandfather was some badass rogue Samurai, I wouldn't bring it up unless he/she did first. That would be unpleasant. I would also not call the guy whatever invective history had slapped on him. Instead I would refer to his actions against the backdrop of his time period. I wouldn't actively offend a Japanese person with a black sheep in his/her family.
