to humanity can outweigh the sheer quantity of many other lives? Or is there some hidden math, here? If Pasteur is the example, then one can argue that it is not just one life with its needs in the balance, but all of the lives made safer, longer, and healthier by his contibutions -- still the many outweigh the few.

What if the choice were between Johann Sebastian Bach and fifty other musicians contemporary with the old master who are completely forgotten today? Now which way does the balance tip?
