Honesty is a matter of behaving in accord with principles. Ethics are the principles for behavior and choices in and of themselves.
This allows the strange situation where one can be honest by lying. For example, if ones ethics dictate that one should never cause undue harm or upset to a person, and such a one is asked for an opinion about anothers appearance, then one could lie by responding "s/he looks quite nice" when one actually believes that the others clothes are mismatched and rumpled, and yet one would still be honest because one has adhered to ones own principles in giving the answer.
But still I am curious; upon what can decisions be based other than benefit. Please note this does not necessarily entail self-benefit; that would be the basis of the ethical system I propose, but need not be the sole basis of all ethical systems. However, if one cannot ascertain the benefit of ones choices -- benefit to whomever -- then on what could one base ones choices? |
