There is no reason to exclude alcohol from the question, other than to elicit a "charged" answer by using the heavily connotated issue of illegal drugs. I think we all could agree that the test itself does not represent a truly effective discussion of ethics.

So, really, the question would be "is the recreational use of pharmaceuticals permissible within X system of ethics." I propose that X be a system of ethics based upon "enlightened self-interest" -- an ethical system based upon individuals making their choices so as to bring about their greatest ultimate happines over the course of a full life. In the light of such, is the recreational use of drugs ethically acceptable when the impediment of legality is removed?
